Does anybody else have that employee, or those employees, who just can’t grasp the impact of the tariffs?

Do any of you have an employee or two who just can’t seem to grasp the impact of tariffs? One of mine struggles to understand how they work. With his hours being cut significantly, he thought I was just trying to avoid giving him a straight answer when I explained that it was due to tariffs. They have affected sales in our industry and driven up our costs—it’s really quite simple.

He asked, rather condescendingly, how extra taxes from Canada and China could slow down consumer sales, insisting it shouldn’t affect packaging. I had previously tried to explain this to him before the tariffs took effect, but it clearly didn’t register. Recently, after I placed some orders at higher prices, I took the time to provide a detailed breakdown of the individual duties on the materials we use.

He was astonished to learn that tariffs are essentially an additional tax imposed on us and that the U.S. isn’t capable of producing everything. In the end, he expressed surprise that his vote for tariffs did not align with what he had expected, and he didn’t understand why it was said that other countries bear the cost.

Another employee initially supported the tariffs until I explained the situation to him. He did his own research and quickly grasped the implications. Though his hours weren’t affected, he was upset about the potential impact on his family and our business.

I’m getting tired of having to explain tariffs and wish more people would take the initiative to educate themselves on the issue.
